The Yin and The Yang
The medial prefrontal cortex exerts top-down control over many key circuits involved in executive function, attention, cognition, and emotional behavior. Rat medial prefrontal cortex excitatory neurons expressing the chemogenetic transducer hM3Dq. A physiologically inert drug (Clozapine-N-Oxide or DREADD Agonist 21) can be used to make these neurons fire.
The balance between recurrent excitation and inhibition is key to canonical cortical computing. This image of the rat medial prefrontal cortex shows that the activity marker c-Fos (Red) is present both in CamKIIa-positive excitatory neurons (Green) and inhibitory neurons (absence of green). Blue marks the nucleus of all cells.
